I sat in my garden last week and thought of this poem, I hope you all like it:

Have you ever been
To see the Carnival Queen?
She rides aloft through streets
With a smile, with a grace, meets and greets
I defy you to suppress a broad smile
When our Queen wears her crown for a while

I have been writing poems for over twenty years now and they all involve things that happen in the village.

Thanks Midlander, it's nice to know you're 'tuning in'.

I wrote this one after a thunder storm:

Gloomy, dark and rocky
Football, golf and hockey
Summer time in our mountain oasis
Like packets of crisps in a sea of faces

The gloom from heaven in clouds descend
The power of gods, a hilltop to amend
Pretended, befriended , our umbrellas unfold
Pink, yellow and shades of old

Rain, rain - like water from springs
Mountain goats shelter, black birds sing
The cafe is empty
Boats sit on grass
Dogs shake their backbone, like earthquakes that pass

Here in my cottage
My rocks fend-off storms
Glass in the window, slate in all forms
Here I can sit and be free of the weather
If it doesn't stop soon
I'll reach the end of my tether.

This one on the theme of the recession:

Credit squeeze, credit crunch, loans and Christmas trees
Everything's gone down the pan
We can't afford libraries
Co-Op, Spar the chippy too
They all see tills go down
Gordon Brown and Mr Darling
Like Coco and Sudds the clown

Have you got some change my dear
Some change for a Big Issue
I need to live and eat and drink
I cry but have no tissue

Work? Not me I'm past all that
I used to drive a lorry
But now my eyes have faded fast
I'm lonely, tired and sorry

Crunch my credit, squeeze my pound
The Dollar, Rand and Shilling
The futures bright for some at least
But for me it seems quite chilling

Banks and cash all swill around
Like sewerage in a barrel
It never leaked in my direction
Or in that of my girlfriend Carroll

We save some pennies, some token pence
And have a week in Dover
We arrive by bus all tired and stiff
We can't afford a Rover

One day we'll be gone and our life forgotten
No pockets sewn in shrouds
But remember this, remember me
I lived quite well - quite proud.

I wrote this one

Old Age

I know you are kind to help me over the road
But I’m really quite capable if truth be told
I know you talk to me as if I’m a child
But you know in my youth I was really quite wild

I have wonderful memories of days gone by
When I was pretty and caught a young man’s eye
When I travelled the world without having a care
Running on golden sands, the wind in my hair

I know you think that I cannot see very well
I know you would worry if I stumbled and fell
But when I was a girl I could run like a doe
Over the hills and down to the valleys below

I know my hair’s the colour of pepper and salt
But that’s just old age; it’s not really my fault
I once had long hair the bright colour of the sun
With ringlets in which it seemed gold had been spun

My face was once smooth like peaches and cream
And I had all my teeth and they all used to gleam
But now my skin’s wrinkly and a little bit tough
And my NHS dentures do look a bit rough

But pity me not for my life has been so full
Never for a moment has it ever been dull
This thing called old age is not as bad as it seems
For when I go to sleep, I am young in my dreams

"For when I go to sleep, I am young in my dreams"
---------------------------------------

I enjoyed reading that. The line above speaks volumes to all of us who gaze through memorie's opaque window and toward our youth.

Sincerely,

Maddy

Thank you Maddy
Here is another I wrote

The Ship of Troubles

There was a sea, a choppy sea last night
It was in my dreams and was raging high
The clouds darkened and there was no more light

The waves were harsh and I thought I would die
On the ship that was empty but for me
Alone in the dark I began to cry

Why was I abandoned, how could that be
Had I done something so terribly wrong?
Would I die in that cold foreboding sea?

Raging winds and mighty waves were as one
As they inflicted vengeance on that boat
No place to hide from that violent action

Yet amongst all that fury I heard a note
From a song and in a voice that I knew
The words were those that my mother wrote

Her voice was as fresh as the morning dew
Just as I remembered it so long ago
As she sang, the wind and the waves withdrew

The song was of a tree that would not grow
But the love around it was strong and true
And caused the roots to spring forth from below

I heard mother say,”be strong I love you”
So on the deck that night I waited ‘til
The morning came with calm and skies of blue

Then I awoke to hear a young bird trill
And I realised the bad dream was a sign
That in daily life we all have free will

Under my troubles I could draw a line
For they were nothing compared to the dream
The world was beautiful and it was mine

I could now face anything it would seem
No dark clouds for me, now the sun would shine

Revans! That was marvelous!

You'll laugh at my latest effort (which I wrote on a bus):

"Its summer", they say but its more like November
It's not like the ones that I used to remember
We basked in the shine of a lovely heat
With hats on our head and sandals on our feet

We walked on the sand, sometimes hand in hand
Dogs were very welcome, now they're all banned
Ice lollys and sodas, cider and cake
We sat in the garden watching everything bake

Where are you hiding oh great ball of fire?
Break through the clouds, do not ever retire
We need your shine on our heads and our hearts
Before summer is ended and hope's dream departs

I watch Big Brother with my lounge window sealed
Darnell singing hip-hop, his tactics concealed
Luke snuggles up to his lady-friend's glow
As Big Brother announces, "Mario ... YOU GO"

Rain follows rain and wind blows my heart
If it doesn't stop soon I'll sit here and dart
To a place in my mind that is forever July
My wedding in Bangor, when the knot I did tie

That day was the start of my summer, my spring
I'd live every day and my heart it did sing
Bliss in a cottage like a troll in euphoria
Good days, happy days, glory and gloryer

Sun shine on me, I ask this out loud
It's free I supose but I've never been proud
I'll take it and bake it and get my skin burned
You dont live forever, this truth I have learned

Yours was lovely Maddy
Here is one about Llanfairfechan

Llanfairfechan

Llanfairfechan, you gave me so much joy
So many things to do when I was young
You gave us all, both girl and boy
Such cherished memories second to none

You gave me the sea in which I would swim
And you gave me your shore to run along
By the pavilion, looking ever so prim
I’d sit on your grass trying daisy chains on

Nant-y-Coed, Three Streams were places I went
To be alone when troubles befell me
Those places you gave me were heaven sent
They were wonderful peaceful areas to be

You gave me your hills on which I would climb
And you gave me your berries to pick
I’d give them my mother who time after time
Would make pies with custard so thick

You gave me your sunsets, watched from my room
What stupendous sights as I watched in awe
Then I would go to my bed as sleep would loom
Wishing I could stay awake to see some more

You entered my heart, where a special place
Is always kept open just for you
And whenever I want childhood steps to retrace
I go to my heart and see memories anew

You've put into words, the finer feelings we all have about our lovely town. I was moved.

I entered a competition with this one. I came across it on the back of a bread wrapper! (it didn't win though!).

I really love reality telly
Would I miss it? Not on your Nelly
From Wife Swap to Ten Tears Younger
I've a terrible and insatiable hunger
For Cilla, Big Brother and Matthew Kelly

Some people say things quite fowl
About the X Factor's Simon Cowell
When he tells them the facts
About their terrible acts
They often give up - chuck in the towel

I remember the first Big Brother
I sat there and watched it with Mother
She hated the thought
Of the things cameras caught
And never watched an other

So I sit on my lonely old sofa
Thinking who will I eventually vote-for
It could be a singer
A babe or a minger
Or a housemate I'd probably go-for

When I want to do something instead
I open some Robinson's bread
It's light and its tasty
I eat it quite hasty
With some cheese or some jam and some spread

---------------------------------------------------

Someone from Robinson's bread wrote to me with a coupon inside, thanking me for my efforts and enclosed a poetry writing guide. Perhaps they were trying to tell me something??

Heres another about Llanfairfechan

A Llanfairfechan Childhood

So much used to happen long ago
Fancy dress competitions, Morris dancing
The Carnival Queen was all aglow
She was beautiful and enchanting

We children would catch the bus to Pen
To the Pictures to see Flash Gordon
To see his actions again and again
Be lost in his daring world just for then

We’d play all sorts of games with a ball
In the quiet streets where cars were rare
Then we’d climb up the quarry one and all
To see what fun we could have up there

The swings used to be near the promenade
And we’d stand on them to swing really high
Sometimes we’d end up battle scarred
As we tried hard to reach up to the sky

Long ago in the woods by Cae Ffynon
We children would play hide and seek
Then we’d jump over the wall and run on
To the cemetery graves we would sneak

We never ran out of things to do
Playing Cowboys and Indians was fun
Hopscotch, cricket and skipping was too
We played everything under the sun

How lucky we were to live there
What memories we all have today
We lived our childhood without a care
Others in cities never lived that way

‘Thank you again Llanfairfechan’
